5 Great steps for creating the perfect guest room

In any home it is highly likely that the home owner is going to spend most of their money on places such as the living room, kitchen and bedrooms and over time this can mean that any guest rooms get neglected. If you are planning on having guests staying over or selling your home anytime soon then remodeling your guest room can reap massive rewards. In this article I intend to give you 5 great steps for creating the perfect guest room.

Step1 – Give the spare room walls and flooring the attention they deserve

The first thing you need to do is examine the state of the walls and also the flooring, does the wall paper look dull? Is the paint becoming dirty? Buy repainting the walls you can cheaply give your room the revamp it so badly needs; in fact it is probably one of the most inexpensive ways that you can renovate your guest room.

Even though painting is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of replenishing a room it is also one that any family members or friends will appreciate. When it comes to selling your home having a well up to date guest room or spare room can actually not only increase the value of your home substantially but also make it more sellable.

When it comes to the flooring, if you have a carpet and it is in serious need of a revamp then I would definitely advise hiring a professional carpet cleaner for the best results possible. However if you have a laminate floor, then by buying some specialist detergent is your best option but depending on the state of your flooring you can always add a rug in order to give a new feel to the room.

Step2 – Pick a co-ordinated colour scheme and stick to it

After you decide on what colour scheme you will be using in the room it is vital you stick to it. Simple things like the rug on the floor you choose, the colour of the clock on the wall and the sheets on the bed will all make as substantial difference and will make guests feel not only welcome but at home when staying in your guest room.

Step 3 – Increasing the guest room storage space

Let’s be honest how many of us have stayed at somebodies home or a motel and been frustrated by the fact that we have had to live out of a suitcase? It’s not something that we enjoy by any means and if you can provide some sort of storage within your guest room it is likely that the guest will be happy and more than likely praise your consideration.

All you need to do is clear out a couple of drawers and/or even give them a bit of room in the wardrobe in there. One thing that I always think is a nice touch is to leave a couple of towels and also some spare toiletries in the drawer to sure how considerate you really are towards guests.

Step 4 – Creating easy bathroom access

How easily accessible is your bathroom from the guest room? Do your guests have to do with a long walk down the hallway? If so then maybe you should think about adding a private bathroom within your guest room? Yes I know this may cost a bit more money, but you guests will not only appreciate this but an extra bathroom can actually add a good amount of money onto your home’s value too.

If you cannot really add a full bathroom then maybe half a bathroom may be appropriate? Somewhere in which you can add a bath or a shower to ensure your guests have somewhere they can wash in privacy and out the way. This idea is probably better off depending on whether you have frequent guests using your guest room.

Step 5 – Adding the finishing touches to your guest room

The little details are the most important when it comes to the finishing touches within your guest room, if you can add little bits and bobs that are going to improve your guests time then do so, adding any of these will be regarded as a good investment by any guest:

  • Television
  • Radio
  • Alarm Clock
  • Phone
  • Recent magazines or books
  • A bedside lamp
  • DVD’s/ Cd’s
  • Cd player

My advice is to think about all the things that have or would make you happy when staying in somebody else’s guest room and try to act on this in order to make your guest time the best it can possibly be.
