Chances are that if you’ve attempted DIY, you’ve had a disaster. A fallen ceiling, a burst pipe, an inadvertently painted family dog. If the project is small, you can end up with a slightly unsatisfactory room. But if you were attempting a full-scale renovation, you could be left with a home you no longer want to live in.
Half Built House, a new Channel 5 series, aims to help home owners who have done just that. The presenter, Sian Astley (pronounced “Cyan” rather than “Sharn”), a developer and builder who has worked on more than 100 houses, says that it’s often a case of people biting off more than they can chew.
“Projects have often grown beyond people’s wildest dreams, and turned into a nightmare. Everything has become more expensive and more difficult,” she explains. “They really didn’t know that it would have such an impact on their lives. Whether due to time, money, or the owners having to do a full-time job, work has come to a halt. The team and I come in and try to turn it around. We give them a couple of rooms, and show them what they thought was impossible is actually achievable.”
Half Built House – Channel 5 have launched a new DIY recovery style programme onto their roster, with real homes getting the benefits of experienced designers in the UK.
DIY and home improvement style shows have been a success on all the Terrestrial channels in the UK, with prime time slots on BBC and ITV with millions of regular viewers so it is no surprise that Channel 5 are looking for their share of the market.
It is not uncommon for DIY to go wrong around the home with lots of people thinking they can do the tasks that professionals make look so easy on these type of shows, so I can’t imagine it was hard to find homes across the UK that are need of recovery!
