Choosing Drawer Runners for Van Conversions and Campervan Builds

Choosing Drawer Runners for Van Conversions and Campervan Builds

Short answer: specify heavy duty, and specify a lock. In the Eurofit range the DS53 (118kg per pair at 450mm, 11 lengths from 350mm to 1200mm) and the DS76 (227kg per pair at 457mm, 26 lengths from 254mm to 1524mm) are both rated for vehicle conversions. The DS76 Locking adds lock-in and lock-out, so a drawer stays shut when the van is moving and stays open while you work at it. Drawer box width for both is the internal cabinet width less 38.4mm.

Please note: all specifications on this page are taken from the Eurofit 2026 catalogue and apply to Eurofit drawer runners only. Other manufacturers build to different profiles and ratings. If you are fitting another brand, work from that manufacturer’s own specification.

Why vehicle drawers need heavy duty runners

A drawer in a house is loaded, opened and closed. A drawer in a vehicle is loaded, then driven, braked, cornered and vibrated for hours at a time. The forces acting on the runner and its fixings have nothing to do with the weight sitting still on the shelf.

That is why the sensible approach is to specify well above the static weight of the contents. Both our heavy-duty series list vehicle and campervan conversions among their intended applications, alongside industrial tool storage and understairs storage.

Lock in and lock out: why it matters

A standard runner has no mechanism to hold the drawer in position. On the road that means a drawer can work its way open on a long descent, and a drawer you have pulled out to reach into can roll shut on a camber.

The DS76 Locking version holds the drawer at both ends of its travel: locked in when closed, locked out when fully open. For a van build, that is the difference between a drawer that is merely strong and one that is safe to drive around with. It shares the DS76 specification otherwise: 227kg per pair at 457mm, 26 lengths from 254mm to 1524mm, 76 x 19.2mm profile.

That release difference is worth planning around. The DS76 has no lever release precisely because of its load capability. The slide does not come apart, so you cannot lift a drawer out to service what is behind it. If you will need to remove drawers regularly, the DS53’s quick release lever may matter more to you than the extra capacity.

Mounting where there are no side panels

Van builds often have no conventional carcase to screw a runner to. Our mounting brackets solve that, and they cover both series compared here, they can be used with DS50, DS53, DS60 and DS76: L-shaped brackets in 3mm plated steel, supplied with a complete fittings pack, with pre-drilled holes aligned to the DS76 fixing positions.

They come in four lengths, 305mm, 406mm, 559mm and 711mm and can be combined to suit longer runners, in either side-mount or base-mount configuration. The plating is corrosion-resistant, which matters in a vehicle far more than in a fitted kitchen.

Remember that length reduces the load rating

Van drawers are often deep, and this is where builds get caught out. Load ratings are quoted at around 450mm and fall as runners get longer. A DS53 rated 118kg at 450mm is 75kg at 800mm and 52kg at 1200mm. A DS76 rated 227kg at 457mm is 140kg at 914mm and 92kg at 1524mm.

Work out the rating at your actual drawer length before you commit to the design.

Frequently asked questions

Do these figures apply to other brands of drawer runner?

No. These are Eurofit specifications from our 2026 catalogue. Other manufacturers rate and build differently, so use the specification for the runner you are fitting.

Do I need locking runners in a campervan?

We would strongly recommend them for anything heavy. A loaded drawer that opens while the vehicle is moving is both a hazard and a good way to damage the drawer front. The DS76 Locking holds the drawer at both ends of travel.

Can I fit heavy duty runners without cabinet side panels?

Yes, with mounting brackets, which can be used with our DS50, DS53, DS60 and DS76 series. They come in four lengths from 305mm to 711mm, can be combined for longer runners, and work for side or base fixing.

Can I take the drawer out of a DS76 runner?

No. The DS76 has no lever release and the slide does not come apart, which is a consequence of its load rating. If you need to remove drawers, choose the DS53 with its quick release lever disconnect.

How much load should I allow for a vehicle drawer?

More than the static weight of the contents. Braking, cornering and vibration all add to what the runner sees, so leave meaningful headroom over the still weight — and calculate it at your drawer’s actual length, not at 450mm.
