Drawer Runner Load Ratings Explained: Why Length Changes the Weight It Holds

Short answer: a load rating applies at one length only, and for Eurofit runners that is 450mm. Ratings peak at around that length and fall away as runners get longer. A Eurofit DS53 carries 118kg per pair at 450mm but only 52kg at 1200mm. A DS76 carries 227kg at 457mm but 92kg at 1524mm. Always check the rating at the length you are actually buying, not the headline figure.

Please note: all figures on this page are taken from the Eurofit 2026 catalogue and apply to Eurofit drawer runners only. Other manufacturers rate their products differently, and at different reference lengths. If you are fitting another brand, work from that manufacturer’s own specification.

What does a drawer runner load rating actually mean?

A load rating is the working weight the runner will carry per pair, not per runner. Runners are sold in pairs and one pair takes one drawer, so the quoted figure is the weight of the drawer box plus its contents.

It is measured at a stated length. Quote a rating without a length and it means very little, which is why cheap listings elsewhere so often advertise a single big number.

Why does the rating fall as runners get longer?

A drawer at full extension is a cantilever. The further the drawer projects, the greater the leverage on the fixings and the more the runner has to resist bending. Doubling the length does not double the load the runner can hold, it reduces it.

The DS53 load curve

The DS53 is our 53mm heavy-duty side-mounted runner, available in 11 lengths from 350mm to 1200mm.

The DS76 load curve

The DS76 is our 76 x 19.2mm heavy-duty runner, available in 26 lengths from 254mm (10in) to 1524mm (60in).

Shorter is not always stronger

Look again at the two tables and you will spot something counter-intuitive. Both series peak in the middle of their range, not at the short end. The DS76 carries 180kg at 254mm but 227kg at 457mm, the shortest runner in the range is not the strongest.

The peak sits around 450mm in both ranges. The practical point is to check the published rating for the exact length you need, rather than assuming a shorter runner must be a stronger one.

So if you have a choice of depth in your design and load is the priority, a 450mm drawer is worth more to you than a 350mm one.

What about deflection?

Deflection is how far the runner sags under its rated load at full extension. A specified, expected amount of movement, not a fault. On the DS53 it runs from 14mm to 19mm across the range; on the DS76, 13mm to 16mm.

Two useful things follow from that. A little droop on a fully loaded, fully extended heavy drawer is normal. And if a drawer sags noticeably more than that, the runner is over its rating for its length rather than faulty.

How much headroom should you allow?

Rate for the drawer at its heaviest realistic load, then leave some margin. A pan drawer, a tool drawer or a drawer in a vehicle build will all see more weight than the furniture drawing suggests and load arrives suddenly when a drawer is slammed rather than gently.

Ratings also assume the runner is properly fitted to a sound, square carcase. A runner screwed into soft or delaminating board will not reach its rating however good the runner is.

Frequently asked questions

Do these figures apply to other brands of drawer runner?

No. These are Eurofit ratings from our own 2026 catalogue, measured at our reference lengths. Other manufacturers test and quote differently, so use the specification for the runner you are fitting.

Is the load rating per runner or per pair?

Per pair. Runners are sold in pairs and one pair carries one drawer, so the figure covers the drawer box and everything in it.

Which length gives the highest load rating?

Around 450mm for both heavy-duty series, 118kg on the DS53 at 450mm and 227kg on the DS76 at 457mm. Ratings fall away both above and below that.

My drawer sags when fully open. Is the runner faulty?

Probably not. Deflection under load is specified: 14–19mm on DS53 and 13–16mm on DS76 at full extension under rated load. Significantly more than that usually means the drawer is over the rating for that runner length.

Can I use two pairs of runners to double the load?

Not reliably, and we would not specify it that way. Load sharing between two pairs depends on both being perfectly aligned, which is difficult to guarantee. Move up to a higher-rated series instead.
