How to Hide Cables on a Table or Desk

 

Short answer: there are four routes. Down through the base, using a cable managed pedestal so the cabling runs inside the column. Through the top, using a grommet where the cable drops through. Along the underside, in a tray or clipped to the frame. Bundled, using a spiral wrap to gather several cables into one tidy run. The right choice depends mostly on one question: does the table ever move?

Answer this first: does the table move?

A fixed table can take the tidiest solution, because the cable route never has to change. A table that gets repositioned needs slack, plus a route that will not snag when someone wheels it across a room.

Get this the wrong way round and you either have a beautifully routed table that cannot be moved, or a mobile table trailing a loop of cable across a walkway.

1. Down through the base

The tidiest answer for a fixed table. A cable managed base has a hollow column, so power plus data cabling runs from the top down inside the column and out at floor level with nothing on show.

2. Through the top with a grommet

A grommet is a lined hole in the table top that a cable drops through, finishing the cut edge so it looks deliberate rather than drilled. It is the standard approach on desks.

Grommets work with any base or leg, which makes them the flexible option. Position them where a cable naturally wants to fall rather than in the geometric centre of the top.

3. Along the underside

A cable tray or a run of clips under the top keeps cables off the floor without needing anything cut into the surface. This is the practical answer for a desk with several devices, plus for a table you would rather not drill.

It also keeps cables out of the way of feet, which is worth as much as the tidiness.

4. Bundle with a spiral wrap

Where several cables run the same route, a spiral wrap gathers them into one. It does not hide cables so much as make one tidy run out of six untidy ones, which is often the realistic goal under a desk.

Cheap, quick, reversible and it works alongside any of the options above.

Add power at the top instead

Sometimes the better answer is to shorten the cable run rather than hide it. A desktop power socket or port set into the top gives users power where they need it, so the only cable to manage is the single feed down to the floor. That pairs well with a cable managed base, which then has just one run to carry.
