What Size Table Base Do I Need for My Table Top?

What Size Table Base Do I Need for My Table Top?

Short answer: two things decide it. The size and shape of your top, plus the height of the table. A taller table needs a bigger base for the same top, because the higher the top sits the more leverage there is to tip it. That is why every one of our bases has a lower maximum top size at poseur height than it does at coffee or dining height. Match the base to both figures rather than to the top alone.

Why height changes the answer

This is the part that catches people out. Take a Golden Gate Small base: at coffee or dining height it will carry a top up to 800mm round. Put the same base on a poseur column and the maximum drops to 600mm round.

Nothing about the base has changed. The top is simply sitting 650mm higher, so any sideways push on the edge of it has far more leverage to work with. A poseur table also tends to get leaned on rather than sat at, which makes it worse.

The Mega is the outlier, because it is a twin-column rectangular base rather than a single pedestal. On a 750 x 400mm footprint it carries a top up to 1500 x 900mm at coffee or dining height, or 1200 x 800mm at poseur height. Note that it needs two columns per base.

The cable managed range is more restricted at Medium

Worth checking rather than assuming. The Golden Gate Cable Managed Medium base carries a top up to 800mm round, where the standard Golden Gate Medium goes to 1000mm. The Large and Extra Large figures match the standard range at 1200mm and 1400mm.

Round or square base?

Shape is partly aesthetic, but it does affect the numbers. Look at the table above and you will see a square top always has a lower maximum than a round one on the same base. A square or rectangular top puts its corners further from the centre of the base than a circle of the same nominal size, so there is more overhang to resist.

Our square base, the Sotra, is the exception worth knowing: on a Medium base it carries a 1000mm round top but only an 800 x 800mm square one.

What else affects stability?

  • Base weight. A heavier base resists tipping. Our Golden Gate bases run from 10.5kg on the Small up to 28.5kg on the Extra Large.
  • Counterweights. Sydney and Vancouver columns are supplied complete with a cast iron four-arm top plate plus counterweight. On the Sydney the counterweight is 8kg on the Medium base and 12kg on the Large.
  • Plate thickness. Golden Gate and Mega use an 8mm mild steel plate. The Sotra uses 10mm.
  • Anti-twist fixing. Golden Gate includes M8 x 40mm screws for anti-twist fixing, so the top cannot rotate on the column.
  • Levelling feet. Adjustable levelling feet are included on the Golden Gate plus the Sotra, which matters on any floor that is not perfectly flat.
