How to Measure a Cabinet Door for Replacement Hinges

 

Short answer: take the old hinge off and measure four things. The cup diameter (the round part sunk into the door, usually 35mm, 26mm on mini hinges, 40mm on thick-door hinges). The hole pattern, meaning the distance between the two fixing screws and how far they sit in from the cup centre line. The door thickness. And the overlay, how the door sits against the cabinet side. Match those four and the new hinge drops into the existing holes.

 

1. Cup diameter

The cup is the shallow round recess bored into the back of the door. Measure across it. Almost all full-size concealed hinges use a 35mm cup, which is the European standard and the reason most concealed hinges are interchangeable.

Two exceptions in our range: mini hinges use a 26mm cup and the 95° thick-door hinge uses a 40mm cup.

2. Hole pattern

Two screws hold the cup into the door. The hole distance is the spacing between them and the offset is how far they sit from the centre of the cup. The standard on 35mm cup hinges is 48mm spacing with a 6mm offset, written as 48/6mm. It is what European hinge boring machines are set up to produce.

This is the measurement that decides whether a replacement is truly a drop-in. Get the cup right but the pattern wrong and you are drilling fresh holes into a door face you cannot easily repair.

3. Door thickness

Measure the door itself. Every hinge has a thickness range it will work with. A hinge outside that range either will not close properly or will not have enough material to hold in.

4. Overlay

Look at how the door sits relative to the cabinet side: covering it fully (full overlay), sharing it with a second door (half overlay), or sitting inside the opening (inset). Overlay is set by the mounting plate height rather than the hinge, so measure the old plate too or note its height marking if it has one.

Note the cup depths sit close together but are not identical, 11.3mm through to 11.7mm on the 35mm series. Where an existing recess is bored to a shallower depth, check the depth as well as the diameter.

Do not forget the mounting plate

The hinge is only half of it. TUTTI hinges work only with TUTTI mounting plates and IntAfit hinges only with IntAfit plates, so if you are moving from another brand you need both parts, even where the door boring matches perfectly.

Within a series it is more forgiving: soft close and self close hinges in the HF43, HF61, HF64 and HF65 ranges use the same plate.

Frequently asked questions

What size are standard cabinet hinges?

Full-size concealed hinges use a 35mm cup, drilled on a 48mm hole pattern with a 6mm offset. That is the European standard, which is why most concealed hinges replace each other directly.

How do I measure a hinge cup?

Take the hinge off the door and measure across the round recess in the door face. 35mm is the usual answer; 26mm means a mini hinge, 40mm a thick-door hinge.

Are all concealed hinges interchangeable?

The door boring usually is, provided the cup diameter, hole pattern and door thickness match. The hinge-to-plate connection is not. Our hinges pair only with plates of the same brand.

What if my cup is 26mm rather than 35mm?

You have a mini hinge and you need a mini replacement. The HF62 (slide on) and HF65 (clip on) both use a 26mm cup on a 32mm pattern for doors 12–18mm thick.

Do I need to measure the mounting plate as well?

Yes, if you can. The plate height sets the overlay, so noting the old one saves recalculating it. If the door was hanging correctly, the existing plate height is the answer.

My door is 25mm thick. Which hinge do I need?

Look at the door thickness column. Most of our 35mm series stop at 22mm but the HF61 165° and HF64 105° go to 26mm and the 95° thick-door hinge covers 15–30mm.
