Clip On vs Slide On Cabinet Hinges: What’s the Difference?
Short answer: the difference is how the hinge attaches to its mounting plate. A clip on hinge presses onto the plate and releases with a lever or clip, so the door comes on and off in seconds with no tools. A slide on hinge slides onto the plate and is fixed with a screw, which is a little slower but very secure. Both use the same European boring pattern and both are available in soft close and self close.
How a clip on hinge works
The hinge arm carries a spring clip that engages the mounting plate. You line the arm up, press until it clicks and the door is hung. To take it off you release the clip.
That matters most when you are hanging a lot of doors, or when doors need to come off again, for decorating, for access behind a cabinet or on site where doors are fitted last to avoid damage.
How a slide on hinge works
The hinge arm slides over the mounting plate and a screw clamps it in place. It takes a screwdriver and a few more seconds per hinge and the door does not come off without undoing that screw.
That is a genuine advantage in some settings: rented property, commercial furniture, anywhere you would rather a door were not casually removable.

Does it change anything else?
Not really and that is the point. Both types use the standard 35mm cup on the 48mm hole pattern with a 6mm offset (26mm cup on the mini series), so the door boring is the same and either type is a drop-in for the other as far as the door is concerned.
What you cannot mix is the plate. TUTTI hinges work only with TUTTI mounting plates and IntAfit hinges only with IntAfit plates. So switching between clip on and slide on generally means changing the plate as well as the hinge, even within our own range.
Which should you choose?
Choose clip on if you are hanging a lot of doors, if doors will need to come off again or if you want the quickest possible fitting. The HF61 is the most popular clip on range we stock and adds three-dimensional adjustment.
Choose slide on if you want the door held captive or if you are matching existing slide on hinges in a cabinet and would rather not change the plates.
For small or thin doors: bathroom cabinets, display cabinets, motorhomes and campervans. The choice narrows to the mini series: HF62 slide on, or HF65 clip on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a slide on hinge with a clip on hinge?
Yes as far as the door is concerned, because the cup boring is the same. You will usually need the matching mounting plate too, since our hinges only pair with plates from the same brand.
Are clip on hinges less secure?
They are held positively by the clip and will not come off in normal use. If you specifically want a door that cannot be lifted off without a tool, a slide on hinge is the better answer.
Do clip on and slide on hinges adjust differently?
No. Both give depth and side adjustment at the arm and height at the plate. Our HF61 and HF63 clip on series offer three-dimensional adjustment.
Which hinge do I need for a framed cabinet with no side panel?
A surface mount face frame hinge. Our HF66 is made for exactly that: framed cabinet construction where there is no side panel to take a mounting plate. It has a 35mm cup, a 105° opening angle and suits doors 14–22mm thick.
