Standard Table and Desk Heights: Coffee, Dining, Bar and Poseur
Short answer: the usual finished heights are around 400–450mm for a coffee table, 720–750mm for a dining table or desk, 900mm for a breakfast bar and 1100–1150mm for a poseur or bar table. The point almost everyone misses is that a table base or column is quoted without the top. Our column heights include the base plate but not the table top, so you add the thickness of your top to get the finished height.
That single detail is behind most of the height queries we take. A 694mm dining column with a 25mm top gives a 719mm table, which is exactly right. Order a 720mm column expecting a 720mm table and you end up with a 745mm one.
The standard heights

What it suits |
|
Coffee table |
400–450mm |
Lounge seating, reception areas, breakout sofas |
|
Bench |
Around 450mm |
Seating rather than a work surface |
|
Dining table and desk |
720–750mm |
Restaurants, canteens, offices, meeting rooms |
|
Breakfast bar |
Around 900mm |
Kitchen islands, casual perch seating |
|
Poseur or bar table |
1100–1150mm |
Bars, standing events, high stools |
These are the conventions the furniture trade works to rather than a legal requirement. Seat height is what really matters: allow roughly 250–300mm between the top of the seat and the underside of the table so people can get their knees under it comfortably.
Our column heights and why they look odd at first
Read our column heights next to the table above and they seem slightly short. That is deliberate. Every figure is the height including the base plate but excluding the table top, so the top thickness takes it up to the finished height.

Take a Sotra dining column at 697mm, add a 25mm top and you have a 722mm table. Add a 40mm top instead and it becomes 737mm. Both sit inside the normal dining range, which is why a little thought about the top thickness is worth having before you order.
Table legs work the same way
Our tubular legs are quoted as leg length before adjustment. Every leg has 30mm of threaded adjustment for levelling, so a leg gives you a range rather than a fixed figure. The top still sits on afterwards.

Hairpin legs cover a wider spread again, from 100mm cabinet feet up to an 860mm breakfast bar height, with 410mm for a coffee table and 710mm for a desk or dining table.
Folding frames are quoted without a top too
Our folding table frames come in 690mm and 710mm nominal frame heights, again without the top. The flip top frame follows the same convention: overall height includes the base plate, so add the top thickness for the finished height.
Working out what you need
- Decide the finished height you want from the first table on this page.
- Measure or choose your top thickness.
- Subtract the top thickness from the finished height. That is the column or leg height to order.
- Check the levelling range. Tubular legs give 30mm of threaded adjustment, so a few millimetres either way is recoverable on site.

The standard finished heights on this page are trade convention rather than a Eurofit specification. The column, leg and frame heights are Eurofit figures from our 2026 catalogue. Other manufacturers may quote heights differently, so check whether a stated height includes the table top.
